My First Band (1975)
In 1975, when I was 13 years old, I organized a band to play at our school’s talent show. We had 2 kids playing electric bass guitars, 2 kids playing electric guitars, 2 kids playing drum sets, 1 kid playing lap steel guitar, and I played the piano and sang.
We played a song called “Taking Care of Business,” written by Randy Bachman.” We also played a song that I wrote called “Dream on Dreamer.” We wanted a cool name, so we called ourselves “Ice.”
We performed in front of about 300 of our classmates at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico. Our audience was full of kids who were screaming and wiggling around with delight, so I think they enjoyed it.
Many members of that band continued playing with me for a couple of years. We played for a few picknic parties. I still keep in touch with most of them.
